The mission of the PNG Safeguard Information System (SIS) is to ensure that the implementation of REDD+ is conducted transparently and in accordance with international and national safeguards, providing accessible and consistent information to all stakeholders, thereby contributing to the sustainable management of PNG’s forests and the well-being of its communities. Providing an avenue for safer and greener future for now and generations beyond.
Key objectives of the PNG SIS include:
- Transparent Information Access: Ensure that information regarding the adherence to Cancun safeguards is accessible to all stakeholders.
Consistency and Regular Updates: Maintain regular updates to the information to reflect the current state of safeguard adherence. - Country-Driven Implementation: Tailor the system to fit PNG’s national circumstances while building on existing systems.
- Support for Summary of Information (SOI): Utilize the SIS for preparing SOIs to the UNFCCC, showcasing how safeguards are being addressed and respected.
Key Functions of the SIS include:
- Collection of Information: Gathering data on how safeguards are being addressed.
- Aggregation of Information: Compiling and organizing the collected data.
- Analysis of Information: Evaluating the data to determine adherence to safeguards.
- Dissemination of Information: Sharing the analyzed information with relevant stakeholders.
Institutional Arrangements:
The SIS is managed by the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) with support from various stakeholders including civil society, the private sector, development partners, and key government agencies. The system’s design leverages existing national information systems to avoid redundancy and ensure efficiency.
Capacity Strengthening:
To maintain the SIS, ongoing capacity-building efforts are essential, including training for stakeholders and securing financial and technical support to ensure the system’s sustainability.
In summary, the PNG SIS aims to uphold the principles of the Cancun safeguards by providing a transparent, consistent, and accessible information system. This ensures that REDD+ activities in PNG are implemented responsibly and effectively, promoting sustainable forest management and benefiting local communities.
